The Bath Tech morning electrical class visited Central Maine Power this week. The students received a wealth of knowledge about lineman work and developed a great respect for what CMP does for customers on a daily basis. Thank you, CMP, for sharing your day and knowledge with RSU 1 students!

In celebration of Read Across America week, the sixth grade classrooms at Woolwich Central School transformed into Dr. Seuss Cafes. Pre-K to 3rd grade classrooms made cafe reservations and were met by sixth grade waitstaff to take their snack, drink, and book orders. Our school's youngest were treated to a Dr. Seuss read aloud and great food service from their sixth grade friends. The Seuss Cafe is a continuation of a tradition that started over 25 years ago by longtime teacher Darcy Emerson.

April is Poetry Month and Dike-Newell School staff and students have been hard at work creating a poetry walk for all to enjoy. Students learned that poetry is a type of writing that attempts to stir the reader's imagination and emotions, and that there are many different kinds of poetry including nursery rhymes, free verse, haiku, concrete and acrostic.

A team of Morse Unified Literacy students presented at the Maine Department of Education (D.O.E.) Inclusive Education Conference, Reimaging Education: Empowering All Learners, Embracing All Abilities, Thursday, April 10, at the Augusta Civic Center. Over 450 educators attended the conference, and our Unified Literacy students shared their presentation, Unified Literacy: Building an Inclusive Community for Readers, Learners, and Leaders. Their workshop demonstrated how a Unified Literacy class fosters inclusion for all students and builds a community of learners, who are seen, heard, recognized, and understood. Unified Literacy is a collaboratively taught integrated humanities class that applies the learning partner model, with general education and functional life skills students, to build a community of readers, learners, and leaders. The class uses reading, art, writing, performing arts, field trips, and board games to facilitate learning opportunities for students. Unified Literacy students form lasting friendships through shared experiences in the classroom.

Woolwich Central School hosted RSU 1’s 28th Annual Battle of the Books on April 10th. The Battle of the Books is a game show style competition for students; they read as many of the Maine Student Book Award nominees as possible and then answer questions about these books. It takes many months to prepare for the Battle of the Books and hours of reading. Congratulations goes out to this year's Battle of the Books champions, Georgetown Central School!

It has been a great week at Fisher-Mitchell School with the start of our monthly challenge: Earth Day. Part of the challenge consists of increasing awareness of our carbon footprint and our food waste. This week the students participated in lunchtime behaviors designed to reduce our waste by focusing on what is recyclable, what is compostable and what is trash. This week the school was able to reduce the weight of our lunchtime waste by 60%. This is just one part of the challenge and the students are rocking it so far!

March is MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH and on Monday, March 24th RSU1 Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first grade students took an exciting field trip to the Montgomery Theater at Morse High school to experience a Portland Symphoy Orchestra KinderKonzert! KinderKonzerts are small ensemble performances (woodwind quintet, brass quintet, string quintet, or percussion ensemble) that use storytelling to provide an introduction to music and orchestral instruments. The brass quintet from the PSO performed the Robert McCloskey classic, Burt Dow, Deep Water Man. Students were excited to hear the beautiful music, and to experience the familiar story in a new way.
