Immunizations and Communicable Diseases
Communicable diseases spread quickly in schools and affect entire communities. Immunization offers the best protection against several communicable diseases. Maine immunization laws require complete vaccination for school attendance. Boosters are required in 7th and 12th grade. Families should contact their school nurse regarding questions or special conditions. Maine conducts an annual survey of school immunization records each year.
Medication at School
The School Nurse CANNOT diagnose, prescribe medications, or treat without a doctor’s order. If it is necessary for a child to receive either prescription or over the counter medications at school/school events, the following procedures must be followed:
All medications, prescription and over-the-counter, must be supplied and delivered by the parent in the original container to the nurse’s office.
Written authorization from the student’s parent and physician is required.
Parents are responsible for refills, and bringing medications to and from school.
Uncollected medication will be discarded at the end of the school year.
A spare labeled prescription bottle is required for medications sent on field trips.
Physical Exams
Physical exams are collected for grades K, 6, and 9, and annually for middle school and high school athletes.
Emergency Action Plans (Asthma, Anaphylaxis, Seizure, and Diabetes)
Emergency Action Plans with medical orders and accompanying rescue medications must be submitted and renewed annually.
Illness and Injuries
A parent or guardian will be notified in the event any illness or injury requires follow up by your child’s medical provider or that prevents your child participating in the normal school day. You will be notified for vomiting, moderate to serious injury, and any disease or condition requiring immediate dismissal or medical follow-up. It is very important that the school has the most current contact information and phone numbers. Please do not send your child to school when they are exhibiting signs of illness. Contact your school nurse for availability of COVID testing.
If you cannot find the information you need on these pages or would like to talk to a member of the Health Services staff, please contact the school nurse at your child's school.
