Dear Friends,

It is the dawning of a new school year as RSU #1 enters its third year of operation.  We have a lot to be proud of and I want to take a moment to highlight some great things happening in RSU.

-     We have a teacher's contract.  Finally. It took over a year to get it right, but it will be a contract that will serve our professional staff as they do the good work of teaching our children.  We have already contracts for all support staff, the kitchen staff and all administrators.  Though some people were impatient with the process, it was not easy to create one unified document out of four very, very different contracts.

-    The Shallop Project:  Fourteen students, one teacher, one master boat builder and the partnership created between RSU 1, Maine's First Ship, BIW and the city of Bath, created a 18 foot replica of a shallop, a 17th century fishing boat.  This project represents the best of student centered learning and was a treat for dozens and dozens of visitors who came daily.

-     Morse High School reached a 90% graduation rate for the first time records of this have been kept.  How big of an event is that? Well, seven years ago, we were third worst in the state. A lot of people can take a bow for this and we have set our eyes on 100% graduate by 2020. We thank the 20 mentors from the city of Bath employees that volunteer to work with our kids.

-    BRCTC, our great vocational center will be adding three state of the art new programs, Welding, Composites and Commercial Art. We know jobs in these three areas will be abundant for the next 50 years, as shipbuilding remains the biggest industry in our community.

-    New school construction has started in Woolwich. Oh, we are so happy for the residents of Woolwich for the hard work that it took to actualize this dream. For the next two years, the Woolwich students will be attending Huse School and the school is shipshape, ready to go.

-     And, if you are looking for us at Central Office, we are happy guests of the City of Bath in the Small School, second floor

-    We continue to expand the Expeditionary Learning model to our schools, taking it to West Bath, Woolwich and an early exploratory to Fisher Mitchell and Phippsburg.

There is a lot of good things happening, despite the depressed economy. We are continuing to improve our schools, our student achievement and strengthen our fiscal and educational position as we embrace yet another year of funding turbulence in Augusta.  We are proud of our school board, working tirelessly to produce a great school system for great kids. Come and visit one.

Sincerely,

William C. Shuttleworth
