Dear Middle and High School Families and Staff,

As you are aware, a 17-minute national walkout is planned for Wednesday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m. in response to the tragedy that occurred in Parkland, Florida.

RSU 1 will allow this student-organized activity to happen.  As of right now, our administrators are aware that some middle and high school students plan to participate in this event.  We are proud that students are passionate about expressing their beliefs. Students in grades 6-12 will be permitted to participate in a brief break to exercise their free speech rights related to the issue of gun violence at schools.  Students that participate will not be penalized regardless of their views, nor will any student be pressured to participate. Students that choose not to be involved will remain in their classrooms.

Our secondary principals are meeting with student-led groups this week and they will communicate specific school plans soon.  Please know that safety continues to be at the forefront of our work. We have been in close communication with local law enforcement, and they will be supporting our efforts on this day.  This is not a public event – it is an event initiated and led by students.

We encourage you to speak with your child about this day.  Please contact your school principal if you have any questions or concerns.
