BMS named MEEA's 2016 School of the Year

BMS Sign

In very exciting news, the Maine Environmental Education Association has named BMS as the 2016 School of the Year! This excerpt from the MEEA announcement gives a wonderful snapshot of why we’re being recognized:

“On behalf of the Maine Environmental Education Association it is my true pleasure to let you know that Bath Middle School has been named as MEEA's 2016 School of the Year! Congratulations to you and the staff of Bath Middle School for your commitment to engaging your students in the environment as you create authentic learning opportunities for them...your good work stands as a role model for other schools in Maine to follow!"

BMS is being recognized for our work over all three grade levels, and for our partnerships in several areas. A large part of our recognition is due to the progression of outdoor and environmental activities we offer students; a 6th grade science camp in partnership with Chewonki, the 7th grade overnight trip to the Ferry Beach Ecology School, and the 8th grade FLOW program with Chewonki. Also of great importance is our dedication to community based environmental work in partnership with the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust. Through our Expeditions, part of our EL Education approach, our students work in the community to chart sea level rise on the Bath waterfront, and have spent the last few years as part of an invasive species study on green crabs. Beginning after the holiday break, we are also beginning a new partnership with Garbage to Garden, for a lunch composting program that will change the way our students and cafeteria dispose of food and paper waste. BMS is honored and humbled to be recognized for this work!
